About Chippey AUM Church

Chippey African Union Methodist (AUM) Church, located in Hockessin, Delaware, is a historic congregation rooted in the African Union Methodist Protestant tradition. The church traces its origins to the growth of the African Union Church movement, one of the first independent Christian denominations organized and governed by African Americans in the United States.

The Hockessin congregation began when land was purchased in 1886 for a house of worship known as “Chippey Chapel,” named in honor of Reverend Edward H. Chippey, a prominent leader in the denomination. The original chapel was rebuilt in 1896 and the congregation was formally incorporated shortly thereafter.

For generations, Chippey AUM Church has served as a spiritual center for worship, fellowship, and community support. Today, the church continues its mission as a Christ-centered ministry committed to prayer, faith, and service while bringing together people from multiple cultures and generations to grow in their relationship with God and one another.
